California's Self Determination Program (SDP)

Introduction and resources

Self Determination Program is a new way for regional center clients to select and pay for services that meet their needs.

"SDP provides individuals and their families with more freedom, control, and responsibility in choosing services and supports to help them meet objectives in their Individual Program Plan"

(Department of Developmental Services)

Similar to a voucher system, SDP participants and families can choose where, when, and how to utilize their budget, with the help of their team.

Why SDP?

At Independence Through GRACE, we have chosen to work with participants as an SDP service provider, rather than a traditional vendored service provider through the regional center.

We think SDP is the future of services! Self-Determination is a concept that is gaining popularity in the IDD community nationally and internationally, and for good reason. The five principles of self-determination, Freedom, Authority, Support, Responsibility, and Confirmation focus on a truly person-centered approach to service provision.  California's version of the Self Determination Program allows participants and service providers the freedom to be creative with how personal goals are achieved.

Our prevocational and vocational programs (Bridges, New Options, and Limitless) are catered toward SDP participants. The GRACE program can be utilized by anyone, SDP participant or not.
